The best movies like Inception are Paprika, The Matrix, Memento, Shutter Island and Predestination. Inception is a strange thing to find a follow-up for, because it's three movies stacked on top of each other: a slick heist picture, a science-fiction concept film, and underneath both, a very sad story about a man who can't let his wife go. If you loved the dream logic
Start here. These films treat dreams, memory and the subconscious as a place you can physically walk around in.
- Paprika (2006) — Satoshi Kon's animated masterpiece about a device that lets therapists enter patients' dreams. The most direct spiritual ancestor to Inception there is, and it's stranger, funnier and only 90 minutes long. Start with this one.
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) — a man erases his ex from his memory and then fights to keep her as the memories collapse around him. The emotional film Inception is quietly trying to be.
- Perfect Blue (1997) — also Kon, also about a mind coming apart. A pop idol loses the thread between performance, stalker and self.
- Waking Life (2001) — rotoscoped, plotless, and the purest "am I dreaming right now" film ever made.
If you loved not trusting reality
The subgenre where the floor gives way in the third act.
- The Matrix (1999) — the obvious one, and still the best. A nested reality, a chosen crew, and rules you learn to bend.

- Existenz (1999) — Cronenberg's fleshy game-within-a-game. Grimier and nastier than Inception, deliberately.
- Vanilla Sky (2001) — lucid dreaming, grief and a face you can't fix.
If you loved the puzzle-box structure
Films built like machines, where the pleasure is watching the gears click into place.
- Predestination (2014) — the tightest time-loop story ever filmed. Say nothing about it to anyone before they watch it.
- Primer (2004) — two engineers build a time machine in a garage. Made for $7,000 and almost impossible to follow on one viewing, by design.
- Coherence (2013) — a dinner party, a passing comet, and a premise that unravels beautifully on almost no budget.
- Source Code (2011) — eight minutes, on repeat, on a train. Lean, clever and surprisingly moving.
